Another October, another mandate: Libya remains adrift

Abstract: As the UN Security Council renews the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya, a pervasive sense of déjà vu lingers, underscoring the council's failure to address the entrenched political and security challenges in Libya. The ongoing stalemate, fueled by the power struggle between the UN-recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli and Khalifa Haftar's eastern-based Government of National Stability, is further aggravated by the tug-of-war over the Central Bank of Libya. International actors, while publicly supporting peace, continue to safeguard their own strategic interests, perpetuating a managed crisis that sustains instability.
This paradox of intervention keeps Libya in a state of "faux stability" while masking the deeper issues of corruption, public disenfranchisement, and a lack of real progress. The ongoing humanitarian crisis, including the catastrophic flooding in Derna, exacerbates public apathy and political corruption, as rival factions manipulate state resources for personal gain. The Security Council's continued cycle of mandates and superficial agreements only deepens Libya's woes, leading to a precarious and unsustainable situation that threatens to reignite conflict. Without a decisive international effort, the current dysfunction will persist, undermining Libyan sovereignty and global stability.
