Fresh approach needed if Daesh is to be defeated

Outlet: Arab News

Language: English

Abstract: Ten years after declaring itself a caliphate, Daesh remains a persistent threat despite major territorial losses. At its peak, it controlled vast lands and conducted global attacks. Though weakened, Daesh has adapted to asymmetric warfare, decentralizing into regional branches that exploit instability.

Daesh affiliates, while autonomous, stay loyal to the core leadership. Daesh-K, its most active branch, has expanded beyond Afghanistan. Propaganda sustains its ideological appeal. In Iraq and Syria, it exploits local grievances and ungoverned areas, complicating eradication efforts.

Globally, Daesh supports affiliates in Africa and Asia, adapting to local conflicts. Its strategic shift to a resilient, global network is aided by reduced global attention.

The global coalition now focuses on countering Daesh’s ideology and finances, emphasizing local governance and stabilization to disrupt recruitment. International cooperation is crucial to disrupt Daesh’s revenue streams and combat its global network. A multifaceted approach is essential to ensure Daesh’s enduring defeat.
