Middle East: Please heed the signs

Abstract: Global food prices have surged significantly, raising concerns about potential inflation, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region where many staples are consumed. Even before the pandemic, Arab countries were grappling with food insecurity, exacerbated by conflicts and climate change-induced challenges like extreme heat and droughts. The pandemic further strained food security, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations like refugees and migrant workers. MENA governments have made efforts to address these challenges, but constrained finances and competing priorities hinder comprehensive solutions. The region's vulnerability to climate change, coupled with increasing food prices, underscores the urgent need for action to bolster domestic food production and ensure long-term food security. Without such measures, the region risks facing widespread hunger and social unrest.
