Sudan: A Tinderbox to All-Out War

Outlet: The SAIS Review of International Affairs

Language: English

Abstract: The recent violent clashes between Sudan's armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exhibit deep-seated tensions between the two factions. There is a power struggle between key figures like General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (‘Hemedti’) for control over Sudan's military and political landscape. External actors, including Russia's Wagner Group and Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, complicate the situation further. Sudan's crisis risks escalating into a broader regional conflict akin to those in Libya and Syria. International organizations such as the United Nations and the African Union are advocating for dialogue to avert further destabilization. Lastly, there is an urgent need for international support to address Sudan's humanitarian crisis and stabilize the situation before it deteriorates further.
