Misused EU funds intended to curb irregular migration support punitive detentions and expulsions, with migrants abandoned in harsh deserts. Despite systemic abuses, Europe remains a symbol of hope. Ironically, EU policies have boosted the migrant-smuggling industry, as heightened border security increases smugglers' profits. Current EU approaches fail to address the root causes of migration like conflict and economic despair. Europe should focus on long-term solutions, such as sustainable development and legal migration pathways, to manage migrant flows while upholding human rights.
