Abstract: Political instability, coups, and the rise of violent extremist groups are alarming trends in West Africa and the Sahel. These regions face serious challenges like weak governance, economic decline, and insecurity. The growing strength of harmful actors in the Sahel threatens to spread chaos across the continent. Despite commitments to democracy and stability, West Africa is seeing repeated failures and inaction, leading to entrenched insecurity. Factors like weak governance and climate change contribute to the rise of violent extremism. In addition, public dissatisfaction with governance failures fuels support for military juntas, further aggravating the situation. The West's focus on security over democracy worsens instability, enabling a cycle of crises. A recalibration of policies is needed, prioritizing long-term support for democracy to address the root causes of disillusionment and prevent further escalation.
