About Hafed Al-Ghwell

Hafed Al-Ghwell, Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the North Africa Initiative at the SAIS Foreign Policy Institute, Johns Hopkins University and Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Center of Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, is an expert in international relations and geopolitical analysis with a focus on the North African countries of Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, and Mauritania.

Career

His career began at the International Monetary Fund in the 1980s, followed by nearly two decades at the World Bank, culminating in his role as Advisor to the Dean of the Board of Executive Directors until the end of 2015.

He then went on to serve as a Senior Advisor at Maxwell Stamp, specialising in Middle Eastern political, economic, and social issues, along with a Senior Advisory position at Oxford Analytica, where he contributed to global risk consultancy. 

He also has experience in other think tank organizations, having been a Senior Nonresident Fellow at the Atlantic Council and a board member of the National Council on the US–Libya Relations and NH & Associates.

Additionally, Hafed has served as a Director of External Affairs and Communication at the Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government.

Education

Hafed Al-Ghwell is an alumnus of George Washington University, Harvard University, and Stanford University. He also holds numerous accreditations from the World Bank Group's management executive programs, focusing on public policy and global economic development.

Contributions to Middle Eastern and North African Studies

Hafed Al-Ghwell's contributions to the study of the Middle East and North Africa cover critical areas such as security, migration, energy and sustainability, and US and EU foreign policy through a Middle Eastern and North African lens.
