New EU commission must change tack on migration

Abstract: Migration between Europe and Africa has become a critical challenge of the 21st century, driven by historical ties, socioeconomic disparities, conflict, and environmental crises. While Europe faces an aging population and labor shortages, Africa’s youthful demographic highlights a pressing need for collaborative solutions. However, the EU’s current approach—focused on fortifying borders and outsourcing migration management to North African countries—addresses symptoms rather than the root causes, perpetuating humanitarian crises and instability in transit regions.
This "Fortress Europe" strategy, characterized by restrictive policies and agreements with North African nations, fails to harness the economic potential of migration to address Europe’s labor market needs. Instead of viewing migrants as threats, Europe could benefit from integrating them into its workforce, alleviating labor shortages and stimulating economic growth. Simultaneously, addressing root causes like political instability, economic despair, and climate change through development-focused collaboration would reduce migratory pressures and foster stronger partnerships between Europe and Africa.
A sustainable migration strategy requires comprehensive policies that create legal pathways, invest in African economies, and support regional stability. By embracing a pragmatic and humane approach, Europe can transform migration from a perceived threat into an opportunity, ensuring mutual economic and social benefits while promoting stability across both continents.
