Abstract: World Water Day, which coincided with a midterm review of the UN’s Water Action Decade, focused on raising awareness of global water scarcity issues and promoting the security and sustainability of freshwater resources. The Middle East and North Africa region particularly faces severe water stress, with 11 of the 17 most water-stressed countries located there. Population growth exacerbates the situation, with water needs increasingly met by imports. By 2050, millions in the region could suffer absolute water scarcity. Climate change worsens the crisis, making water insecurity a threat multiplier. However, there are still opportunities for equitable solutions, such as promoting resilient transboundary water relations and reducing dependence on groundwater. International cooperation, as emphasized by the recent UN Water Conference, is crucial for addressing this pressing issue.
