Abstract: The EU's response to irregular migration in the Mediterranean, focused on security rather than humane interventions, has exacerbated the crisis, leading to tragic consequences and rising anti-immigrant sentiments. Current policies prioritize deterrence over addressing root causes, fueling human rights abuses and xenophobia. The EU must shift towards comprehensive solutions, including investing in development, expanding legal pathways for migration, improving reception and integration, providing humanitarian assistance, and reforming asylum policies. Sustainable search-and-rescue operations and burden-sharing among member states are essential for addressing the crisis effectively.
