Libya slowly settling into a permanent stalemate

Outlet: Arab News

Abstract: Libya's pursuit of stability since the Arab Spring has been fraught with challenges, leading to a perpetual stalemate exacerbated by internal strife and external interventions. Despite the country's vast oil wealth, aspirations for democracy have faltered, leaving Libya in a state of political and social disarray. The international community's disjointed response has failed to resolve the stalemate, allowing hybrid actors to flourish and exacerbating economic hardships for ordinary Libyans. The consequences extend beyond Libya's borders, impacting neighbouring countries and contributing to regional instability. Fragmentation, infrastructure decay, and economic stagnation have created a bleak reality for Libya's populace, particularly its youth, who face limited opportunities and are vulnerable to radicalization and illegal migration. Environmental concerns are sidelined amid the ongoing crisis, further compounding long-term challenges. Breaking the cycle of dysfunction requires concerted domestic efforts, including protests highlighting deep-seated grievances, alongside a coordinated international strategy focused on promoting legitimate governance and addressing root causes of conflict.
