Sudan needs peace now

Abstract: The civil war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has created an escalating humanitarian crisis that threatens to destabilize the entire Horn of Africa. With nearly 10 million people displaced and over 25 million facing acute hunger, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continues to intensify, fueled by failed peace initiatives and strategic power plays. International efforts to mediate, including those led by the U.S., regional organizations, and global powers, have largely faltered, allowing both factions to exploit peace processes while civilian suffering worsens. The conflict risks transforming Sudan into a permanent failed state, reminiscent of Somalia, with potential regional repercussions involving Ethiopia, Chad, South Sudan, and others. As peace remains elusive, the strategic significance of Sudan has attracted rival powers, turning the crisis into a geopolitical struggle. Without decisive action and an inclusive peace process that involves the Sudanese public, Sudan may follow the path of Libya’s fragmented state or become a haven for extremism, further destabilizing Africa. The world must act swiftly to prevent further catastrophe.
