Arab Maghreb Union needs a whole new foundation

Language: English

Abstract: The Arab Maghreb Union, established 33 years ago, aimed to create an economic and political powerhouse in North Africa. However, due to a lack of political will and unresolved tensions among member states, the union remains dormant. Intra-regional trade is abysmally low, hindering economic growth potential. Reinvigorating the union requires overcoming protectionism, resolving tensions, and implementing comprehensive economic policies tailored to the region's needs. More importantly, a new foundation, sensitive to the need for a comprehensive framework for cooperation, must be established to address present and future challenges, as the window for action is considerably narrower than it was 33 years ago.
