Libya faces the same old problems in the new year

Abstract: Even though a new year has begun, Libya is still engulfed in an extended conflict reminiscent of previous turbulent years. The nation remains fragmented and vulnerable to manipulation by both internal and external forces as a result of the failure of attempts at political reconciliation. A decade of instability and public disappointment has been sustained by political manoeuvring and power conflicts that overshadow the promise of democratic development. Since powerful elites undercut important goals and given that there is an absence of sincere public involvement, international interventions—including those carried out by the UN—have not produced significant results. The lack of responsible leadership and ongoing geopolitical conflicts further threaten Libya's already uncertain future.
