The cost of missed opportunities in the Maghreb

Outlet: Arab News

Language: English

Abstract: The Arab Maghreb Union's dream of unity remains elusive due to political hostilities and external pressures. Despite calls for economic integration, skepticism among Maghreb countries persists, and tensions between Algeria and Morocco hinder progress, reflecting a broader reluctance to cooperate. It does not help that some external actors further exacerbate such divisions. The region's lack of integration negatively impacts its economic growth and social progress, leaving it vulnerable to instability and external influence. Thus, to unlock the Maghreb's potential, reforms promoting trade openness, gender equity, and social cohesion are vital. Failure to act risks further fragmentation and missed opportunities for development and stability.
